This is a beginner Photoshop tutorial that will teach you the basics of the new Content Aware feature that became available in CS5.

Step 1) Find a photograph        

Find a photograph you would like to use for the experiment. You can use a personal one you would like to touch up or something you have found and can use under public licensing.

 

 

Step 2) Make your selection

We will now be selecting the object(s) that we will want to delete. The easiest way to do this is to use the lasso tool and go around the object(s) leave about a 2px padding for the rendering engine to match the sorroundings the best.

 

Step 3) Content Aware

Once you have your selection made we will now be getting rid of the object. To do this go to Edit > Fill. Once there the dialog box will pop up. You should have the option to now use Content Aware fill instead of filling with a solid color or a gradient.

 

Step 4) Photoshop Rendering Magic

Now you can sit back and have yourself a nice sip of your coffee while you watch Photoshop do all the legwork. Remember the days of having to trace the person using the pen tool, then using the clone and spot healing tools. Those days are over. You will notice depending on your selection the rendering engine may take a few seconds.

You will also notice while this is not perfect for some pictures and items this will ideally save you a bunch of time on small touchups that beforehand would have been time consuming to complete.
